What is washi

——

The word “washi”means the traditional paper in Japanese language. The production of Japanese “washi” paper, which are listed as the world intangible cultural heritage, adopt a traditional physical method, reflecting the fine craftsmanship spirit. Unlike ordinary "western paper" production, which uses a large amount of chemicals to extract pulp, the production of “washi” paper adheres to the tradition of physical manual work to prevent the destruction of plant fibers, making “washi”paper have the characteristics of longer fiber, thinner texture, higher strength, better washing fastness, etc.

What is washi fiber

——

Using “washi” paper as raw materials, cut into thin strips, and then spun into yarn, that is, ”washi” paper fiber.  After nearly 20 years of research, Japanese craftsmen have successfully produced high-quality yarn from “washi”paper and formed a unique and stable technology.

Among various kinds of raw materials for making paper, japanese craftsmen selected  "Manila hemp" to make washipaper. Manila hemp is a naturally growing herb, without artificial cultivation, it has strong regeneration ability and short growth cycle of 3-year maturity Therefore, washi paper fiber sources from nature and is environment-friendly product.

Characteristics of washi fiber

——

In the process of making washi paper, natural plant fibers undergo physical washing , hammering, twisting and air drying, a stable and unique porous structure is formed. It lays the foundation for other characteristics of washi paper fiber. As shown in Figure 1.

01.

It has the breathable, refreshing texture of pure linen fiber, while it is soft, light, comfortable, without the slightest tingling feeling

02.

As mentioned above, the porous structure forms a micro tubular air circulation system, which enable it to be superior in moisture absorption and release, it will not stick to the skin even if you sweat. As shown in Figure 2.

03.

Natural deodorization effect

Tested by Japanese authorities (the data are as follows), “washi” paper fibers can significantly reduce the odor of ammonia, acetic acid and isovaleric acid.  It is durable after being washed many times. The data hereby enclosed is that of after washing 10 times. As shown in Figure 3.

In 2010, Japanese female astronauts adopted “washi”fiber underwear to overcome the odor problem caused by inconvenient washing in spaceship, and eventually the “washi” underwear was highly appraised for its distinguished deodorization property.

04.

Superior in thermal insulation property

According to test of Japanese authorities, the thermal conductivity Of “washi” fiber is 0.06(W/M.K), while that of wool and cotton is 0.37 and 0.54 respectively. Therefore, garment made by “washi” fiber Can make you feel much warmer than that of wool or cotton.

05.

Natural anti-UV effect:

according to the test report below, the UV shielding rate reaches 97% . As shown in Figure 4.

06.

Washable and abrasion-resistant, no pilling, no hairiness; Also refer to the above test report, anti-pilling level 5 . As shown in Figure 5.
